Podcast Recording Equipment Recommendations, Challenges & Solutions

Your first decision

If you have read any of the podcasting book out there, you may have been confused by the choices in microphones.   These books recommend a number of mics under a 100 dollars, but you can often find better sound for less.

A USB mic or mic/headset can cost around 30 to 40 dollars and provide a clean, noise free, professional sound.  Most podcasting set ups that use a mixer/mic combination also uses a jack that plugs directly into the computer sound card.  The sound card is typically located right next to the fan and the power source.  This will cause a lot of interference.

I don’t regret spending 150 buck for a set up, but I wish I had known just how good a USB mic can sound before I did.

Don't forget the pop filter

You Need:

Pantyhose (knee high work best)

Wire hanger or wire

Tape

Instructions

Loop the wire leaving a 6 to 7 inch stem

Insert into the pantyhose and pull tight

Use tape to attach the pantyhose at the bottom of the loop

Trim off extra pantyhose

That’s it.

I 2nd the think twice before purchasing a mic

I agree with Daryl about thinking twice before buying an expensive condenser microphone.  I did my first 10 or so shows with a USB dynamic microphone and it worked fine.  To be honest with you, my sound quality actually got worse for a while I was trying to figure out the mic, mixer, and my room dynamics.  I still think I pick up more room noise and echo then I did with my cheap mic.  The advantage of a condenser mic is that you get a richer sound.
